Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in the United States is an actress and rapper. In music, film and on television, Queen Latifah is the recipient of the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nods and nominations for an Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, NJ. Her parents are Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Their divorce occurred in the year Latifah was ten years old. Latifah attended Catholic school in Newark, NJ and was educated by the Baptist Church. Latifah was the stage name she used at the time she turned eight. It means fragile in Arabic. Being a tall girl, at 5'10, Latifah was a power forward on her high school basketball team. The song she performed was "Home" from The Wiz in the course of a show at her highschool. Latifah started beatboxing for the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah was among the founding members of the model of the Flavor Unit which at that time consisted of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King created a demo of the hip-hop Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music signed Latifah following her hearing of the song. Her first single Wrath of My Madness, in the year 1988.
